Stockton outpost

Just thought I'd give an update on the Stockton outpost of the SLAC community garden...

I've been harvesting lettuce for several weeks now. It's great being able to just run out to the garden for lettuce whenever we need it -- latest example was for last night's tacos!

My tomatoes (Sun Gold) have been ripening over the last week. We used some in the tacos last night as well. The plants got attacked by aphids a few weeks ago, though, so they don't seem to be as big as they could be, but at least they're producing some tomatoes. I sprayed the plants with a solution of water and dishwashing soap and that seemed to help get rid of the aphids. Not quite organic, but not as toxic as the stuff they sell at Lowe's!

I harvested my first zucchini this morning and a big handful of green beans. Cucumbers look like they should be ready in a week or so!

Planting begins tomorrow!!

Blue Heron

I spotted the Blue Heron at the top of the garden on April 20th, and snapped him with my crappy camera phone. Hopefully he was there hunting for ground squirrels, gophers and mice!

Spring harvest

Parsnips we planted in the fall. The tops kept getting eaten by some critter - but eventually they got green tops & came out alright. Graeme took this photo shortly before he roasted them.

We picked a few Fava beans over the last couple weeks. we are burring the remains to add nitrogen to the soil.

Erik & I planted Thai Basil, Traditional Basil and Chives in one of the 4x4 boxes today. It may be a bit cold now, but this shouldn't last too long. The other 4x4 box will get Dill and Cilantro.

Other: I bought Gypsum & spread it out over a couple plots. This is good for adding calcium to the ground (for tomatoes!) and more importantly breaking up the clay.

Everyone in the group has come out at some point this spring & helped clear the plots. We need to plug away at this for another week before we start doing massive planting. After that, just watering and weeding.

Lettuce gone wild! Self-seeding from earlier this year! Behind the fence are carrots planted by Graeme. We also planted parsnips and Pak Choy in the other 4x4 box. The 3x3 box not shown has broccolie.


Allyson, your Brussels Sprouts are calling for you! Where are you? Basically ready to harvest. Cindy will take them for the holidays. Did I say they prevent H1N1 flu? Anything that strong should be able to knock the daylights out of anything. Anyone who likes them must be quite a charactor (i.e., Allyson or Cindy). I am a wimp & rather dull or a dullard & hate the smelly little things.

Fall planting

Had record rain last tuesday.

Before the rain: planted carrots, parsnips, Pak Choy, Fava Beans. Graeme and Cindy are quite active. Apura helped with the Fava beans.

Graeme started a bunch of broccili seeds at home which he will bring the seedlings in this week. Cindy and her housemate started a garden in thier yard. Be interesting to see if it tolerates the dogs.

There are still Zukes growing! Much slower, so easier to catch before they get to big. The Sun Sweet still has stuff to harvest! We have been pulling out much of the dead or tired plants.
